Creativity

Darkmoon's Rants #75

There was a fight I got into a little while back over creativity. A friend of mine was rather put off by the fact that I have the ability to write a bunch of stuff for this site on a regular basis (whether or not any of you think that stuff is good is a matter for another rant, heh heh). The debate got to the point where they actually said they'd rather not be my friend if I was to be creative.

On the flip side, I am rather pissy right now because I recently tried... again... to draw some stuff for my comic. I will admit my skills in drawing lack. I have a degree in art, and I draw for shit. But I'm still pissy because I should be able to draw at least a little something, and about the only things I can draw the same, cartoon wise, is a gerbil and a bunny.

So it comes down to the fact that I'm pissy because I can't do what others can, and my friend is similarly upset for similar reasons directed at me. I don't fight with others about it, but I understand where she's coming from.

Is that creativity though, or just practiced skill. Take Miss Mab for example. We all know how her stuff looks (and if not, go look around this site for the drawn characters, and hit her site to see for yourself), but she will be the first to say that her stuff is so good because she practices a lot.

And yet, she can invent clothes and outfits and make them look real without looking at anything. Is that creativity or practice. Is there a difference for some people.

I don't think I write better now than I did three years ago. I certainly type faster, an acquired skill, but better? Hell, I think writing Online and doing a shit load of rants has, if anything, ruined my grammar more than aided it. I can crank out articles, but it's not like I ever couldn't I've just broadened my scope over time to take on different challenges. Is that creativity, being able to write and pushing myself, or is it just skill and stupidity.

Can others not draw or write because of something innately different in them, or could, over time, everyone paint like Picasso if they just practiced? I dunno. But it gets me thinking.
